How to Winterize Your Purification System

The temperatures are dropping, and it's time to put your purification system away for winter. With just a few simple steps, you can ensure your system will be ready to use again in the Spring.

RO MEMBRANES

The most important filter in your system is the RO Membrane. Depending on your system, you may have just 1 or up to 3. Any time you won't be using your system for 3 or more weeks, it's time to preserve the membranes so they don't get fouled. A fouled membrane will have poor flow or may need to be replaced before you can clean again. To save yourself from having to spend big bucks on a replacement, take a few minutes and use RO Guardian.

Steps to use RO Guardian:

  1. Open up your RO Housing.
  2. Disconnect your Resin Housing.
  3. Mix 1 packet of RO Guardian to 1 Gallon of Water. (Each RO Membrane will need a full gallon mixture).
  4. Pour the mixture into your RO Housing over the sides of the RO Membrane. (Don't pour directly down the center). Allow the mixture to fully saturate the RO. Membrane. It may require letting it settle before you add the rest of the gallon in.
  5. Put to RO Cap back on.

After those steps are completed, your system can sit all winter long. To start up again in the Spring, allow water to flush through the system to remove the RO Guardian. You can leave your DI housing disconnected during the flushing process. Reconnect it once you're ready to start cleaning.

The DI Resin, Chloramine, and Sediment filters can be left in your system during the winter. When you're ready to work again, you should immediately change the pre-filters out for some fresh ones. The DI Resin may or may not need to be changed. You can take a TDS reading and if it's too high even after you think you've flushed out the RO Guardian, go ahead and change your resin too.

If you live in extremely frigid temperatures, instead of mixing your RO Guardian with water, you can mix it with RV antifreeze. It's important you use RV antifreeze.

QUICK TIPS

  • Don't let your system freeze or housings may crack
  • Keep your system in a heated garage or warm space in your house or shop
  • Use RO Guardian for your RO Membranes anytime your system will sit for 3 weeks or more
  • Use one packet of RO Guardian per RO Membrane
  • Simply flush the RO Guardian out of the system to use again
  • It's best practice to replace pre-filters before next use
