Hose Reels for Water Fed Window Cleaning: Setup, Tips, and Top Picks

What happens when you have a water fed pole, plus a purification system, plus a boatload of hose? Usually a tripping hazard, but we can fix that! Instead of rolling up to a job and just tossing your hose around, bust out a hose reel. These are great additions for both commercial and residential jobs!

Stay Neat. Work Faster. Look Professional

Would you rather spend triple the time manually wrapping up hundreds of feet of hose or spend a couple minutes spinning a handle around? Maybe I’m the weird one, but I’d rather just let the reel do the work instead of fighting a long length of hose. Hose reels make it easy to retract hose, no matter how much you have rolled out.

The other great thing about being able to only roll out the length you need is that you can avoid kinks. You don’t have too much excess hose strewn across the ground that can get twisted the wrong way. Using only the hose length you need also looks cleaner and more professional to your customers. When they look out their windows at you working around their yard, they’ll see a nice, orderly setup instead of a random assortment of hose left all over. It’s also easier to bring along with you. Instead of hose that’s left everywhere, it’s tidy and organized.

Where Does a Hose Reel Go in Your Setup

The XERO HD 150 and XERO Portable Hose Reels are designed to go AFTER the system and before the pole hose. This allows for ample water flow out to your pole. This DOES NOT go between the source water and the system. You want a thicker, wider diameter garden hose for that job. Trying to use this before your purification system can starve it for water and the output will be pitiful.

What Hose Reels Does XERO Offer?

The Portable Hose Reel says it all in the name. This reel has a convenient handle so you can carry it wherever you want to set up. It’s available in 150’ and 250’ options depending on the size of the jobs you tackle. It has rubber feet that keep it slightly lifted off the ground and help make it more stable. This reel can sit right next to your system and you can work your way around the job with just your pole and the hose length off the reel. It’s easy to bring it to where you want to set up station on the job.

The HD 150 Reel is designed to be mounted to your truck, van, or trailer. This unit is heavier, and although it could be lugged around, you probably don’t want to do that. This holds 150 feet of hose to get water from your purification system to your pole. Work your way around half the house, and then, if hose is running short, go back to the start and do the other half.

Mounting to your truck also ensures you don’t have to pull your systems in and out. It’s great for saving time loading and unloading equipment, and you don’t have to worry about the reel getting pulled or knocked over when it’s mounted. For this reel, you would want to mount it to your vehicle where it’s easy to connect to your system and also easy to wind and unwind the hose. You want to avoid anything that would be an obstacle to the hose moving freely, or anything that might slice the hose. If you did want to keep it as a free-standing unit, it has four rubber feet that keep it lifted off the ground.

Top quality reel:
By far one of the smoothest hose reels yet, if you’re looking for quality, it’s definitely the HD 150. Smooth as butter.

No matter which hose reel you pick, they work very similarly. The whip line connects to the system and the other end to your pole fitting. This premium quick connect fitting can be used as the go-between from your hose reel to your pole hose. It also includes an on/off knob for controlling the flow of water.

Which hose reel do I need?

How can you choose the right option? Let’s break it down with a couple of easy questions!

  1. First and foremost, do you plan on carrying your hose reel or mounting it to your rig? If you have that answer already, it makes this an easy choice. Mounted is definitely the HD 150. If you know you’ll be wanting to carry this reel all over, then we recommend the Portable Hose Reel. If you might just want to occasionally move it around, then the HD 150 is still on the table.

  2. Do you know how much hose you need? If you need over 200’ feet, then that’s absolutely the Portable Hose Reel. If you’re okay with maxing out at 200’, the HD 150 Reel would still work for you.

If you haven’t eliminated either option yet, let’s look at the pros and cons of each so you can make the best choice:

Portable Hose Reel

PROS:

  • Lightweight aluminum frame

  • Easy carry handle

  • Comes in two lengths

CONS:

  • Cannot be used for soft washing

  • Can tip or move if tugged on too aggressively

HD 150 Hose Reel

PROS:

  • Allows you to leave your systems in your vehicle

  • Easy to mount

  • Smooth operation

  • Can also be used for soft washing

CONS:

  • Limited hose length

  • Heavier

Pro Tip: When winding the hose back in, make sure it rolls up across the entire reel and doesn’t try to wind up unevenly only on one side.

As far as operation, durability, and quality go, both are pretty comparable. No matter which you choose, you’ll be making a great investment into saving time and looking like you have your act together. Both reels feature the same, high-quality, kink-resistant, and durable ⅜ inch hose. Want to dive a little deeper to get the best option for your setup?
